For 52 years, Melba’s Dance has performed at McAllen Civic Center, but this year is different. This is the first year in which professional photographers were hired to shoot Melba’s Dance photos during the rehearsal and performance of Melba’s McAllen Dance Theatre.
“The results exceeded my expectations,” said Melba Huber.

Gabi Ruiz and Liz Ramos, two former Melba's dancers, were visited by Melba Huber and Julie Doyle Wilson on trips to New York City. Ruiz is a dancer and understudy in In The Heights, and Ramos is dance captain for The Addams Family.

Twenty-two dancers from Melba's School of Dance enjoyed the St. Louis Tap Festival July 25-31. The Festival is attended regularly by Melba Huber, who conducts a tap history panel for the event every year. For more than 25 years, she has interviewed the top tap dancers for her monthly tap columns now featured on the website MelbasDance.com.

The staff at Melba's McAllen dance school know that for many parents, finding the appropriate environment for their young child can be quite a challenge. Assortments of questions come into play when tackling such a difficult decision. Is this the best time for my child to begin stepping away from the home? Are the teachers qualified and will they serve as suitable influences on my impressionable youth? Is this new environment safe and productive for my child?

I have learned from 50 years experience at Melba’s McAllen dance school what to do and what not to do in planning a children’s dance curriculum. In my early years as a teacher, I always let the parents choose the type of dance for their children, as I wanted to please and include the parents. Years later, I realized my mistake. Most parents don’t realize what subjects in dance will most benefit their children throughout their lives.

At Melba’s Dance Studio, our hip hop dance classes focus on grooving to the beat of the music and having a good time. Students are exposed to all types of hip hop music and dance ranging from krumping and hyphy moves, to breaking and “pop and lock” moves.

Classical ballet training at Melba’s School of Dance is the underlying technical basis for all other forms of dance. It is the most demanding and most disciplined of all dance forms, but it can be the most rewarding. With a solid ballet foundation, classically trained dancers can transfer their skills into jazz, tap, hip-hop and many other dance forms.

This jazz dance class at Melba’s School of Dance and Gymnastics is designed for the students’ enjoyment and allows our young students to get down and get groovy. We use upbeat and funky, kid-friendly music to get us moving.

Melba Huber is the founder of the McAllen Dance Theatre Company that performs every February at the McAllen Civic Center. The February Showcase features a full act of ballet followed by a second act of show-stopping tap, jazz, lyrical, hip-hop, musical theatre, and variety dance numbers. Auditions are held each year for three levels of company.

Since 1958 Melba's has been dedicated to teaching the technique and discipline required in dance, which allows the students to feel pride in their personal accomplishments. This developmental training will last a lifetime.
Melba's School of Dancing is the largest dancing school in the Rio Grande Valley and offers preschool combination ballet-tap-gymnastics classes, preschool funk, ballet, tap, hip-hop, jazz, musical theatre, and three company-level sections. Since 1958, Melba’s School of Dance has been offering quality dance instruction for students from McAllen, Edinburg, Mission, Pharr, San Juan, Alamo, Donna, Weslaco, Rio Grande City, Edcouch, Elsa, La Joya, Hidalgo, Mercedes and Reynosa.
Starting with one dance studio in McAllen, the Melba’s dance complex now includes six studios, a preschool gym, a dancewear store and a snack barre.

In the year when millions of Lincoln Head Pennies first poured out of the US Mint and thousands of Model Ts first rolled off of assembly lines, a one-of-a-kind person entered the world on May 15, 1909.
